Barn Swallows and Ravens

Our 4-7-year olds are the Barn Swallows. Snacks, mud kitchen, free play time, tending the garden, and assisting an adult or older child with a farm project tends to be what we see most in our Barn Swallows in the afternoons. Building emotional resilience and working through negotiations with peers is a big part of their supported learning experiences at Sunbeam. They have space and time to practice expression and communication.

In the age group 7-11, our Ravens, this group of homeschoolers and after-school students naturally take on leadership roles. They are seen as industrious, observant, playful, and helpful in our afternoon program.

Using real tools and projects of their choosing, they are found leading cooking projects, tending the animals and building and making things, such as toys or structures for the animals, fun features for the school, or personal creations that they may want to take home. Ravens will learn skills and safety responsibilities for using real tools, and they will learn iterative design process such as prototyping, revising, refining. Taking on increasing responsibility while assessing risk and respecting limits is a big part of the Ravens’ supported experiences at Sunbeam.

Our Afternoon Program prioritizes child-directed play in a safe, calm environment where children can hang out with friends and go at their own pace.

Our daily flow is based on the children’s choices and interests. We offer children a safe space to be themselves, relax, play with friends, and move their bodies. Children can climb the oak tree, play in the mud kitchen, cook from the garden, tend animals, and create with tinkering and visual art materials.

In the afternoon we create space for an out-breath, allowing them time to process their morning experiences via creative or physical expression deep imaginative play with a friend, or quiet solo time.
